Seven-year-old Sol spends the day at her grandfather's house for a surprise party for Sol's father, Tonatiuh. As daylight fades, Sol realizes that her world is about to change dramatically.

The film focuses on Sol's day and how she copes with it, as well as the whole family. Although the acting is top-notch, the subject matter is really depressing, and the fact that the film is essentially huis-clos (even the car scene shows nothing but the interior of the car) makes it a suffocating and unpleasant experience.

The moviegoers must have felt as exhausted as I did at the end

Obviously, the death of a loved one is a sad experience, but this level of realism can hit you pretty hard. People just sat in their seats as the end credits rolled, taking in the massive blow they had just experienced.
